Virginia Piper Cancer Institute adds advanced radiation device

Allina's Virginia Piper Cancer Institute has installed the Trilogy Linear Accelerator with RapidArc™ at its Radiation Oncology Clinic at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

When you have radiation treatment using the Trilogy Linear Accelerator with RapidArc™, a typical 12-minute treatment is done in less than two minutes.

Abbott Northwestern is one of only 15 sites nationwide and 70 worldwide to offer this breakthrough technology.

Approximately 50 to 60 percent of cancer patients are treated with radiation therapy at some time during their disease.

The Virginia Piper Cancer Institute's Radiation Oncology Department merges superior technical capabilities with a staff of radiation oncologists, medical radiation physicists, radiation therapists and radiation oncology nurses.

Sophisticated equipment and treatment techniques treat even the rarest types of cancer, relieve adverse symptoms and improve quality of life. In addition, highly accurate state-of-the-art equipment lets staff members tailor each patient's treatment. Patients have access to many special procedures and have all their treatment at Abbott Northwestern.

Abbott Northwestern's Radiation Oncology Department has been a leader in specialized services for over a decade. We are:

  • the first Minnesota center to treat patients with intensity modulated radiation therapy
  • one of three centers in Minnesota to use high dose rate brachytherapy
  • one of a handful of centers in Minnesota to use stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy.

The Radiation Oncology Department also offers standard treatments including 3-D conformal radiation therapy, prostate seed implants , intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), total body irradiation (TBI), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), fractionated stereotactic radiation therapy (FSR) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).

Additionally, the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute has begun using a new treatment for patients suffering from a certain type of liver cancer: Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) and microspheres (SIRŪ - Spheres).
