At any time during pregnancy or delivery, you’ll have 24/7 access to Minnesota Perinatal Physicians. They offer genetic testing, high resolution ultrasound and the most advanced techniques and expertise for handling any complication that may arise.

A mother who believes she is in labor will first stop at the Maternal Assessment Center. From there, she will be escorted to a labor and delivery room.

All Anesthesia services, such as epidurals, are provided by Northwest Anesthesia, PA

Nurse-midwives can provide individualized and holistic care to families at Abbott Northwestern's Birth Center.

Most newborns can be taken care of in the nursery located on the maternity floor. New parents can decide how much time their new baby will spend in the nursery, being cared for by nurses. Hospitalists monitor babies’ vital signs and coordinate necessary tests and procedures, such as circumcisions.

For babies who are premature or who need special care, Abbott Northwestern has a special care nursery.

Other babies who need highly specialized treatment from expert pediatricians will go to Children’s Hospital & Clinics – Minneapolis’ Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Children’s NICU is connected to Abbott Northwestern through an underground tunnel and there is a connection between the NICU and the television in the mother’s room, so parents may watch the baby.

The Penny George Institute for Health and Healing offers several services to new moms before, during and after delivery.

The OB Homecare program offers a number of services in the patients’ home, like monitoring diabetes or preterm labor during pregnancy. As well, OB Homecare nurses will visit new parents and newborns following delivery, giving them a chance to ask questions, ensure proper healing and ensure the baby is gaining weight. Many services are covered by insurance, so patients are encouraged to check with their insurance plan.

The Maternal/Infant Outpatient Center’s Infant Feeding Program provides outpatient appointments with a lactation consultant, breastfeeding retail supplies and lactation phone consultations.

In collaboration with Allina Mental Health, the Birth Center offers a postpartum depression support group. This weekly, no-fee support group is led by a licensed psychologist. It is open to mothers who are struggling with emotional issues during the postpartum period (generally up to one year). Participants do not need to be diagnosed with postpartum depression to attend. The group helps mothers cope with issues like:

• excessive anxiety and worry about the baby
• lack of confidence in their new roles as mothers
• lack of connection with the baby
• emotional distress stemming from a difficult labor/delivery
• excessive crying
• exaggerated emotional reactions to breastfeeding challenges.

Abbott Northwestern partners with First Day Photo to provide photography for new parents and babies before they leave the hospital.
