Andersen Clinic
Andersen Schools of Many Voices is one of the first full-service, school-based
clinics and is next to Abbott Northwestern Hospital. The clinic began as a joint
project of Abbott Northwestern, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics-Minneapolis,
and a coalition of health maintenance organizations. The clinic, now managed by
Children’s Hospitals and Clinics, has regular contracts with HMOs, and has enrolled
more children in Medical Assistance, bringing the percentage of uninsured children
down from 35 to 22.
The school-based clinic not only provides health care to school children, but
is an important data resource on health care delivery and health outcomes for
health systems addressing under-served kids. The clinic is also an opportunity
to test of a new health care delivery model. Many of the children at the school
have no permanent primary care clinic, and providing preventive health care before
was difficult.
A study of how the clinic has influenced asthma outcomes shows that it has successfully
reduced hospitalizations for asthma by 75 to 80 percent. Outpatient visits for
care without asthma symptoms have doubled, and the percentage of students seeing
a specialist for asthma has increased.
