Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering for a worthy cause can bring great joy and self-esteem.
If you've ever thought about volunteering, Abbott Northwestern Hospital is a great place to start. Because it's the largest hospital in the Twin Cities, there are lots of opportunities to choose from. You can volunteer in one of the 50- plus areas throughout the hospital -- during the day, in the evening or on the weekends. Whatever is most convenient for your schedule. 

You'll meet all sorts of people, build valuable skills, and have access to employee discounts and free educational programs. 

We rely on volunteers to staff many of our programs and services -- so we need your help. Please don't just think about volunteering, take the first step and do it. We invite you to become a part of our winning team. 

New Opportunities
Now is your chance to work in a brand new, state of the art facility. Abbott Northwestern’s new Heart Hospital is now open and we’re looking for receptionists/greeters in our cardiac, orthopaedics and neurological areas. Greet families and help them become oriented to the station and find their way around the hospital. Computer experience necessary. Shifts will be 2-4 hours beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing through 9 p.m. in the evening. Friendly, outgoing people with good customer service skills are needed.

The Center for Outpatient Care, located at the corner of 494 and 169 in Edina, is in need of volunteers who will serve as greeters, patient transporters and clerical assistants. This facility houses several physician offices and an outpatient surgical unit.

Who Volunteers

Adult Volunteers
You'll be able to work directly with patients and their families. You'll have the opportunity to work independently, with others, with patients, or doing clerical tasks. 

Junior Volunteers
If you're between the ages of 13 and 18, we have volunteer opportunities for you after school, on the weekends or during summer vacation. Students come from all over the metropolitan area to volunteer at Abbott Northwestern. Did you know the Minneapolis school district gives two credits a year to students who volunteer? Check it out. 

High school students planning a college major in the health care field and meeting certain hours qualifications may apply for the Pennock Scholarship.

Volunteering Benefits 
If you volunteer at Abbott Northwestern, you'll receive:

• a free meal pass for the day you volunteer and free ramp parking 
• access to hospital educational programs, in-services and workshops 
• discount tickets for community activities (i.e. movies, theater) 
• recognition through a special yearly volunteer appreciation event

How to Volunteer

Volunteer orientation classes are held every month. If you're interested in finding out more about volunteering at Abbott Northwestern or would like an application sent to you, please contact Volunteer Services at 612-863-4281.
