Obstetrics And High-Risk Perinatal Care
WomenCare offers comprehensive care throughout a woman’s pregnancy and during her transition to parenting. Women choosing to deliver at Abbott Northwestern will be cared
for in an environment that provides for safety in both low- and high-risk birth experiences, invites total family participation, and offers many options including a private room for every woman and her family. A variety of resources are available to assist in ongoing evaluation and individualized care delivery.
Antepartal testing is available for women who may have health risks related to high blood pressure, diabetes, prolonged pregnancies and other conditions. Separate tests can evaluate the baby’s development and overall health, including heart rate, blood circulation, and limb and body movements.
Gestational Diabetes
Approximately 4 percent of pregnant women will develop gestational diabetes. If not treated, a higher birth-weight infant may result, which could cause delivery concerns for both
mother and infant. Working with WomenCare, your physician will develop a personal diabetes management plan for you.
Perinatal Center
Mothers and babies who are or may be at high-risk gain an important advantage in being able to access the Perinatal Center of Abbott Northwestern Hospital, the pre-eminent center for high-risk care in the Upper Midwest. The specialized Perinatal Center staff, in partnership with Children’s Hospitals and Clinics – Minneapolis, provides the highest quality care for mothers and their newborns who require intensive observation due to high risk needs. These professionals have achieved a statistically significant increase in the survival rate for low-birth-weight babies.

Education and Support
Educational programs and professional staff are available to support women and their families in making informed decisions regarding planning for birth and for life changes after delivery. To assist women and their families in preparing for the births of babies and adjusting to new roles as parents, WomenCare offers a series of childbirth and parent education classes through Allina Class Registration at 1-866-904-9962. Participation in these classes provides support for parents and parents-to-be as they focus on increasing their confidence, developing realistic expectations and preparing for the newest members of their families.
Classes include childbirth for first-time parents, caring for an infant, breast-feeding, and childbirth and parenting preparation for pregnancies with multiples. WomenCare also
offers “Pregnancy After A Loss,” a special program for women and their families who have experienced a past loss of a baby and who are expecting again or considering
another pregnancy.
Another important resource is the Postpartum Depression Support Group, which offers support and education for women who are experiencing or are at risk for postpartum depression. Mothers are welcome to bring their babies with them to the weekly group sessions.
