Renowned bariatric surgeons join Allina Medical Clinic

Minneapolis, Minn 06/05/2007--Bariatric surgeons Daniel Baker, MD, Frederick (Rick) Johnson, MD and Margaret Moga, PA, joined Allina Medical Clinic on June 1, 2007.  The established physician practice, now known as Allina Medical Clinic - Surgical Specialties, is owned and managed by Allina Medical Clinic.  As part of Allina Medical Clinic, the bariatric group can offer a wider array of health care services for its patients.

The clinic remains in the same offices on the campus of Unity Hospital, at 500 Osbourne Road NE, Suite 200.

The surgeons are well known as leading specialists in surgical intervention for obesity and will continue to provide bariatric surgery through the Unity Hospital Bariatric Center in Fridley.

The Unity Bariatric Center is nationally recognized as a "Bariatric Center of Excellence" by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

The surgeons perform open and laparoscopic bariatric procedures, including LAP-Band® adjustable gastric banding and Roux-en Y gastric bypass, and revisions.

Experienced providers

Dr. Baker has focused on gastric operations for obesity control for the past 25 years. Since 1985, the majority of his 1,600+ procedures have been the Roux-en Y gastric bypass. The procedure's excellent results go hand-in-hand with Dr. Baker's ongoing study and innovations in surgical safety, patient preparation and screening, pain reduction, long-term follow up, and cost savings.

Dr. Baker is an alumnus of Hamline University and graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School. After he completed his internship at Minneapolis General Hospital and residency in general surgery at Hennepin County General Hospital (now Hennepin County Medical Center), he entered private practice.

A general surgeon at Unity Hospital, Dr. Rick Johnson had a special interest in areas of intestinal, breast, hernia, thyroid, and laparoscopic surgery. Over time, as a colleague of Dr. Daniel Baker, Dr. Johnson became increasingly interested in the problem of obesity and the impact on a patient’s health and mobility. Dr. Johnson now applies his clinical expertise and surgical skills toward improving the health, lifestyle, and longevity of morbidly obese patients.

Dr. Johnson has performed more than 1100 open Roux-en Y gastric bypass surgeries. He also performs the laparoscopic Roux-en Y gastric bypass and LAP-Band® adjustable gastric banding.

Dr. Johnson’s background, education, and professional career are all centered in Minnesota. He grew up in Cloquet, Minn., and received his undergraduate, medical degree and surgical training at the University of Minnesota. Between 1976 and 1978, Dr. Johnson performed surgery as a Major in the United States Air Force Medical Corps, at Scott AFB, Ill.
