Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute offers golf league for people with physical disabilities

MINNEAPOLIS 05/24/2007--This summer's Sister Kenny® Rehabilitation Institute Golf League for people with physical disabilities has begun at Braemar Golf Course in Edina, Minn.

A golf league member steadies himself next to his golf card as he puts a ball.

Watch the KARE-11 News Extra about the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute Golf League.

The league's lessons and tee times take place from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Monday except Memorial Day through August 27. Golfers in the league have access to a wide range of golf activities -- from lessons and play on the executive course to an end-of-the-season 18-hole and 9-hole tournaments -- for people who have had spinal cord injuries, amputations, strokes, polio, arthritis and other physical disabilities.

League registration is $20, plus $10 for each round of golf played on Braemar's nine-hole executive course each Monday. The registration fees include:

  • consultations with therapeutic recreational specialists from the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital who can assist with swing techniques and introduction of adapted equipment designed to meet the needs of individual golfers
  • free loaner golf clubs and access to golf carts and single-rider golf carts
  • five golf lessons from a Braemar golf pro who has 10 plus years of teaching individuals with disabilities

This year's Sister Kenny Golf Tournament for Individuals with Physical Disabilities is scheduled for Friday, August 24. Participants can compete on the 18-hole regulation course or the 9-hole executive course.
