On the Move Walk Across America
The 4th Annual On the Move--Walk Across America wrapped up on Monday, May 21, 2007 with a community celebration during the All City Track Meet. The program is designed to increase physical activity and improve nutrition by having students and adults track their daily steps using a pedometer. To help reduce the spread of obesity and the serious diseases associated with it, such as heart disease and diabetes, the Owatonna Clinic - Mayo Health System, Owatonna Hospital – Allina Hospitals & Clinics, Owatonna Parks and Recreation, Owatonna Public Schools, St. Mary’s School and Steele County Public Health, have joined together to sponsor the 4th Annual On the Move-Walk Across America program.
Participants simply tracked their steps each day by wearing a pedometer, and logging them on thestep tracker form. Every Monday, participants reported their steps.
What if you don't walk?
People can do so much more than walking to get into shape! The Activity Conversion Chart allows you to participate in almost any activity and calculates how many steps it's worth. Simply time your activity and then multiply the number of minutes by the number of steps your activity is worth, then add that to your daily pedometer total.
Research has shown that the eating and physical activity patterns of most Americans have made us the most overweight nation in the world. More than 60 percent of adults don’t get the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity a day and we’re getting heavier every year.
Some ideas to increase your steps are:
- take a walk at noon
- host a walking meeting
- park further away at the store
- march in place while talking on the phone or watching TV
Some ideas to decrease 100 calories include:
- drinking diet soda or water instead of regular soda or juice
- leave a few bites on your plate
- put half of your entree in a doggie bag when you go out to eat
It's surprising how easy it is to increase walking by using a pedometer!
A survey, conducted by Owatonna Hospital and Owatonna Clinic, showed that tracking steps can be a motivator to increase physical activity among all ages.
