Rehabilitation doctors within Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Associates are board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation doctors are technically known as physiatrists. Physiatrists are trained to:
diagnose the extent of an injury through a physical exam, electromyography and/or nerve conduction studies
prescribe medicines and assistive devices such as braces and artificial limbs.
employ a variety of healing therapies, from traction to electrotherapy and massage
tailor a course of therapeutic exercise to help restore function, and avoid future injury
coordinate a team of rehabilitation professionals if extensive rehabilitation is indicated. This can be done either as an inpatient either at the Sister
Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at United Hospital or Abbott Northwestern Hospital, or as an outpatient.
Sister Kenny physicians have two primary clinic locations — at Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute on Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s campus, and across from United Hospital in St. Paul. Physician services also are offered in several other Twin Cities communities, including at Buffalo Hospital, Cambridge Medical Center, St. Francis Medical Center in Shakopee, Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, Owatonna Hospital and Unity Hosptial in Fridley.
