Sports Medicine Treatments

Abbott Northwestern Medical Associates can help you overcome or prevent injury and pain in these and other ways:

• prolotherapy
• therapeutic injections
• physical therapy

Prolotherapy helps reduce or control pain from arthritis, fibromyalgia, herniated disk, sciatica, tendonitis, and back, neck or other musculoskeletal problems. This unique treatment uses dextrose solution, injected into a ligament or tendon, to stimulate the body to repair itself. Learn more from one of our experts… 


Therapeutic injections target pain relief to specific joints or muscles. We offer these options:

• Corticosteroid joint injection is a "shot" that goes within the joint capsule to alleviate pain. For certain areas, such as the knee, the positive effects can last for months. Before giving the cortisone injection, the physician may insert a needle into the joint to extract excess fluid. 
• Trigger point injections go into a very tense area of muscle that causes spasm and pain. The injection often causes an immediate feeling of decreased pain because it stops the pain/spasm cycle. This can allow active treatments, such as physical therapy or physician-supervised home exercise, to happen.
• Diagnostic injections temporarily numb an area so that a doctor can better identify a problem. After a physical examination, the doctor very selectively injects tissues or areas. By numbing certain areas, the physician can more accurately identify which tissues may be contributing to the patient’s symptoms.
• Viscosupplementation sends a jelly-like medication into the knee reduce pain by deadening nerve endings. The medication also acts like natural cartilage by creating a shock absorber between the bones and easing the pain associated with weight bearing and joint movement. It is injected directly into the knee with a needle and can be beneficial for up to three months. 

Physical therapy helps decrease pain and restore strength and range of motion after an injury or surgery to help you fully recover. It is also used to teach people how to move properly to prevent injuries. Learn more…


Sports pads, braces and supports help prevent injury when participating in certain sports. 

• We have many commonly used pads, braces and supports available for purchase. 
• We also have the materials and expertise to supplement standard equipment needs. For custom-made pads, braces and supports, we work with Sister Kenny Sports & Physical Therapy Center in Sartell.
